  1. 1808-1879. French artist. His sharply 
  2. dramatic and satirical cartoons dissected 
  3. Parisian society. His produced over 4,000 
  4. lithographs and, mainly after 1860, powerful 
  5. satirical oil paintings that were little 
  6. appreciated in his lifetime. Daumier drew for 
  7. La Caricature, Charivari, and other 
  8. periodicals. He created several fictitious 
  9. stereotypes of contemporary figures and was 
  10. once imprisoned for an attack on Louis 
  11. Philippe. His paintings show a fluent 
  12. technique and mainly monochrome palette. He 
  13. also produced sculptures of his caricatures, 
  14. such as the bronze statuette of Ratapoil 
  15. about 1850 (Louvre, Paris).
